Prevalence and economic connotation of bovine and caprine hydatidosis at Abergele International Export Slaughterhouse, Mekele, Tigray Region

A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2017 to April 2018 investigate the prevalence and economic significance of bovine caprine hydatidosis at Abergelle international export slaughterhouse, Mekele, Tigray region. This has been carried out based on antemortem postmortem examinations. Among 940 cattle goats examined, 104 (11.06%) were found be positive for hydatid cyst. Whereas, 520 slaughtered 420 goats, 86 (16.54%) and18 (4.29%) cyst, respectively. There a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in with different body condition scores (55.34% poor 6.25% good condition). The same holds true (14.28% 0.97% score). But variation not concerning age origin animals. From examined organs, 55 (10.57%) lung, 31 (5.96%) liver positive. However, 13 (3.09%) lungs 5 (1.19%) livers cyst viability fertility test indicated that 28 (32.56%) cysts fertile while 53 (61.28%) infertile (5.81%) calcified. Of these cattle, 8 (28.57%) viable 20 (71.43%) non-viable. In (72.2%) fertile, 4 (22.2%) 1 (5.6%) 8(61.54%) 5(38.5%) annual loss estimated 2,101,540.2 65,897.9 ETB, financial recorded altogether by International Export Slaughterhouse 2,167,438.1 ETB. conclusion, is major cause organ carcass condemnation slaughterhouse. high compared both species; lung most frequently affected followed liver.
